Clapperboard 101 for Film Students

This assumes;
1)You’re shooting digitally and as part of a small student crew where excess manpower is not a luxury
2)The focus of the project is the end product, not practising on-set skills

Sticks Are you recording sound on camera or separately? Chances are you’re not recording sound at all. Even if you are recording separately, if you’re using a modern digital camera or an SLR then you’ve got a reference track anyway. You don’t need this.

Colour Sticks & Charts Do you know what to do with them? No? Then you don’t need them.

Film Title Are you sending film to a lab? Might it get mixed up with another production? Is your edit not in house? Are you leaving unnamed or automatically incremented files lying around other people’s computers without backups? No? Then you don’t need this.

Scene, Slate & Take Your film is probably 10 mins long, at most. Do you need scene numbers? Chances are you don’t even have them, or an actual script supervisor either. Even if you’re logging takes you don’t need to have a visual ident on each clip to flag as g/ng in post. Do you need to tell the lab which to print? No you don’t. You don’t need this.

Prod. Company You don’t have a production company, you’re a student. Grow up.

Dir. & DOP This is irrelevant information, You don’t need this.

Date You’re shooting digitally - ever heard of metadata? You don’t need this.

FPS, Shutter & ISO Again, metadata - and chances are you don’t have any idea what shutter speeds/angles actually mean anyway. If you’re operating and aren’t using, and remembering, a base ISO you should consider another role. You don’t need this.

MOS/SYNC Do you need to match audio tapes/files to film in post? Of course you don’t. Did you even keep any written records? Nope. If you’ve got a digital camera you shouldn’t be shooting without sound anyway. Even if you are logging scenes and takes, you can’t see a board on an audio file. Shout it out loud.

INT/EXT Are you sending this to a lab? Are you going to be absent from the edit? Do you not know your own script? You don’t need this.

DAY/NITE Are you sending this to a lab? Are you shooting day for night? Are you using a lamp with an odd temperature? Do you not know your own script? You don’t need this.

Protip!
How about you try and make a good film rather than worrying about this shit, yeah? You’re not going to impress your lecturers by using a board - it doesn’t get you extra marks.
